Do you compete with the meter supplier?

The new meters are smart — don't they verify themselves?

Smart meters report better, but they still report about themselves: a bypass around a smart meter is as invisible as one around a mechanical meter, and register drift affects both. Verification is structural, not technological — it requires a second, independent measurement, which is what zone inlet telemetry provides.

How would we catch a failing meter batch early?

By slope. Each zone's vend-to-inlet ratio should hold steady; a zone whose ratio declines month over month has meters under-registering (or bypasses growing). Cross-referencing declining zones against installation batches localises the suspect serial ranges before the loss becomes material.
