Instrumentation and control in Kenya — measuring the plant, not just running it.

Kenyan industry is well served for control. Panels get built, PLCs get programmed, plants run. The layer that is thin — and the one Kenyan regulation is quietly making compulsory — is measurement that persists: flow, level, energy, production and discharge, recorded continuously, retained, and exportable in the form somebody is going to ask for. That is where addanode works.

Two different searches

Electrical contracting and instrumentation are different trades.

Looking for engineering support in Kenya returns two distinct kinds of firm in one list. Separating them saves everyone a meeting:

Electrical engineering and installation

Cabling, distribution boards, motor control centres, panel building, standby plant installation and the site electrical work that keeps a plant powered and certified. Nairobi and Mombasa have capable firms doing exactly this — and if that is the need, that is who to call.

Instrumentation, control integration and telemetry

Measuring what the plant does and keeping the answer: field instruments, reading the PLCs, drives and meters already installed, and the platform that retains, trends, reconciles and alerts. This is our layer, and on most sites it is the one that does not exist yet.

They pair naturally on one project — your electrical contractor takes the power path and the panel work, we take the measurement, the integration and the software.

Why this matters in Kenya specifically

The law has started specifying instruments.

Kenya is unusual in East Africa in that several of its regulations now name measurement directly rather than leaving it to the operator's judgement. Three examples, all current:

  • Water abstraction. The Water Resources Regulations 2021 require Category B, C and D users to install an automated measuring meter or smart meter, require every permit holder to install an airline in their boreholes so water levels can be measured, require a daily abstraction record in cubic metres kept available for twenty-four months, and charge a 10% penalty on total water used where consumption is not assessed by continuous automated measurement — see borehole water permit compliance.
  • Effluent discharge. NEMA's regime sets limits and designated-lab sampling at the licence's frequency, which leaves the days between samples to whatever you can evidence — see NEMA effluent compliance.
  • Utility performance. WASREB ranks water utilities on nine indicators including metering ratio and non-revenue water, published annually and publicly. The 2024/25 report shows the metering ratio flat at 97% for a third year while losses rose to 48% — the gap being zone measurement, not customer meters. See our analysis of Impact 18.

The pattern across all three is the same: Kenyan regulation increasingly asks for a continuous record rather than a periodic result. That is an instrumentation requirement whether or not anyone calls it one.

What we instrument

Six measurements that carry most Kenyan sites.

  1. Flow and level. Abstraction, process use, discharge, tanks and boreholes — including the automated metering and level measurement the water regulations require, and the daily totals they ask you to retain.
  2. Production and downtime, per line. Counts, run state, stop events with duration and reason, from signals the machine usually already produces.
  3. Energy, sub-metered. Per line, per department, per major drive — which makes energy per tonne a measured figure, and shows what runs when nothing is being produced.
  4. Condition on rotating equipment. Vibration, temperature and motor current on pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors, trended continuously.
  5. Temperature and cold chain. Cold rooms, stores and transit, with the deviation alert going to a phone rather than to a chart read on Monday — see cold chain monitoring in Kenya.

Where a PLC, drive, MCC, meter or controller can be read — Modbus, OPC, pulse, analogue — we read it. New instruments go in only where a measurement is genuinely absent, which keeps a first project sized to the gap rather than to the site.

Four practical constraints.

  • Sites spread beyond the plant fence. Boreholes, tanks, pump stations, farm blocks and cold stores are often kilometres from the office. LoRaWAN where cellular thins out, solar where there is no supply, local storage under both.
  • Planned outages are a scheduled event, not a surprise. Kenya Power publishes planned interruptions, including multi-hour works affecting economic zones. Monitoring that logs through them keeps the production record intact and lets you separate a planned outage from a fault.
  • Compliance data and operating data are the same data. The abstraction figure your permit needs and the water cost figure your production manager needs come from one meter. Instrumenting once for both is materially cheaper than doing it twice, and it is how most Kenyan projects should be scoped.

Instrumentation and control in Kenya — common questions

Are you an electrical contractor or a systems integrator?

A systems integrator on the measurement and telemetry side. We specify and install field instruments, integrate with the PLCs, drives, meters and controllers already on site, and provide the platform that retains and acts on the data. Cabling, boards, panel building and site electrical work stay with your electrical contractor, and splitting a project that way generally runs better than asking either trade to do both.

Do you replace our existing PLC or SCADA?

No — we read it. Where your control system exposes data over Modbus, OPC, pulse or analogue outputs we take it from there and add retention, trending, reconciliation and alerting. Replacing working control is expensive and risky; the gap on most plants is that nothing keeps the history.

Can you supply the metering our water permit requires?

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons Kenyan sites come to us. The Water Resources Regulations 2021 call for an automated measuring meter for Category B, C and D users, an airline in every permit holder's boreholes so water levels can be measured, and a daily abstraction record in cubic metres available for the preceding twenty-four months. We instrument for that record and make it exportable in the shape a return needs.

Do you handle calibration?

Traceable calibration is performed by accredited calibration laboratories, and that is where certificates come from. What we provide is the engineering around it: instrumenting the process so monitoring records exist automatically, and holding the instrument register — make, model, serial number, parameter, range, frequency, last certificate, next due date — with alerts before anything expires.

Can one system cover several sites?

Yes — group operations, estates with multiple boreholes, processors with several plants and contractors managing assets across client sites all run this way. Sites roll up to a comparison view and drill down to individual equipment, with access controlled per site.

What does a first project cost?

Driven by how many measurement points, how many can be read from equipment you already own, whether power and network reach each point, and how much integration is needed. We quote a written cost band after a remote assessment — panel photographs, meter makes and models, and a line list are usually enough to size it. Most sites start with one line or one water system and extend once that data exists.
