Kenya keeps tightening the rules. Every one of them is a measurement.
Avocado is where Kenyan horticulture's compliance load has risen fastest, and the direction is consistent: the regulator keeps replacing judgement with evidence. According to AFA and Horticultural Crops Directorate announcements reported through 2025 and 2026, the minimum dry matter for Hass and Fuerte was raised to 24% (from 21% and 20%), harvesting for export opened on 2 April 2026 after maturity improved, oil-processing fruit could not be harvested until 30 April 2026, and sea exports were suspended alongside a complete ban on avocado oil exports from October 2025 for that season. KS 1758, the horticulture code of practice, is now the working baseline for EU and Chinese buyers.
Every consignment also needs a KEPHIS phytosanitary certificate — the quarantine targets being false codling moth and fruit fly — and packhouses must be KEPHIS-registered and traceable through the Integrated Export Import Certification System.
Dry matter and pest freedom are settled in a laboratory and at inspection, not by a sensor. What temperature monitoring adds is the part of the chain nobody can certify retrospectively: that the fruit which passed inspection at the packhouse was still held correctly through cold room, loading, transit and port. A rejection at destination is argued with records, and the exporter who has a continuous trace from packhouse door to vessel is in a completely different negotiating position from one who has a delivery note and a temperature set-point.
The loading dock is where the trace usually breaks. Cold rooms tend to be monitored; the twenty minutes on a hot apron between cold room and reefer usually is not — and it is enough to matter. If you monitor one new point this season, monitor that one.
Smart irrigation, honestly scoped.
"Smart irrigation" covers two quite different purchases in Kenya, and mixing them up is how growers end up disappointed. The first is control — valves, fertigation, scheduling — normally supplied and commissioned by your irrigation contractor, and we don't replace them. The second is measurement, which is where we work: soil moisture at depth so scheduling responds to the root zone rather than the calendar, flow and pressure per block so a burst or a blocked filter shows up the same day, borehole level and pump behaviour so the water source is managed as a source rather than a tap, and tank levels so a night of pumping isn't wasted on an overflow.

How do Kenyan exporters monitor cold rooms remotely?
With continuous telemetry: sensors in each room report temperature, humidity and power state to the addaNet platform, which raises WhatsApp and email alerts the moment a threshold is crossed. Can monitoring work on an off-grid farm with no reliable power or signal?
Yes. Sensors run on solar and long-life batteries, so mains power is not required. Where mobile coverage is missing, a private LoRaWAN gateway on the farm carries readings without any operator network — and every device buffers locally, so a coverage gap never becomes a data gap.
Will the temperature records satisfy export compliance and buyer audits?
The records are continuous, time-stamped and tamper-evident, exportable per cold room or per consignment — the format buyer QA teams and certification auditors ask for. What they replace is the hand-filled log sheet whose gaps are exactly where the questions start.
Can you monitor a reefer truck or container in transit to Mombasa?
Yes. Transit loggers travel with the load, buffering readings through the coverage holes on the corridor and reporting temperature and position whenever a network appears. At hand-over you have a complete record of the move — useful for claims, and more useful for finding the depot or leg where loads routinely warm up.
We already have thermostats and a generator — what does monitoring add?
A thermostat controls; it doesn't tell anyone at 2 a.m. that the generator failed to take the load. Monitoring adds the alert, the power-event detection and the permanent record — the difference between finding a warm room at shift change and stopping the drift when it starts.
Does monitoring help with avocado export compliance?
For part of it. Dry matter, maturity and pest freedom are settled by testing and KEPHIS inspection — no sensor changes those. What continuous temperature and humidity records do is close the part of the chain nobody inspects: that fruit which passed at the packhouse stayed within specification through cold room, loading, transit and port. That record is what a claim or a rejection at destination is argued with, and it is also what the more demanding EU and Chinese buyers increasingly ask to see alongside KS 1758 compliance.
Can you monitor irrigation as well as the cold chain?
Yes, on the same gateway. Soil moisture at root depth, flow and pressure per block, tank levels, and borehole level and pump behaviour. We measure rather than control — your irrigation contractor's valves and fertigation stay as they are — and the abstraction figures the system produces are the daily record your water abstraction permit already requires under the Water Resources Regulations 2021.
