Every Ghanaian household knows the prepaid rhythm from ECG's electricity meters and MoMo top-ups. As water metering modernises — a metering laboratory now operates in Accra, and "only water through meters gets billed" is the official direction — the schemes that thrive will be the ones whose meters are independently verifiable. addanode doesn't sell prepaid meters. The vending platform grades its own homework
Prepaid systems report what they vend — not what physically flowed. An independent bulk measurement on the supply side, reconciled daily against vends, is the only neutral answer to "are we delivering what we're selling?" A persistent gap means bypass, meter drift or a platform fault; without the measurement, it means an argument.
Meter fleets age invisibly
Mechanical and prepaid meters under-register as they wear — silently converting revenue water into loss. Zone-level reconciliation (independent inlet meter versus the sum of consumer meters) exposes drift in aggregate and ranks which streets deserve a metering-lab visit, so replacement budgets chase evidence rather than age alone.
Standpipes and kiosks fail quietly
Community standpipes and vendor points are where prepaid meets the public. A jammed valve, empty tank or dead point loses revenue and trust by the hour. Uptime telemetry — power, flow activity, tank level — turns each point into a monitored asset with a same-day repair ticket instead of a rumour.

- Prepaid literacy is an asset. Because ECG normalised tokens, top-ups and "credit low" behaviour, water schemes piloting prepaid in Ghana skip the consumer-education mountain. What they can't skip is proving the meters fair — the verification layer is what keeps the social licence the electricity years built.
- MoMo is the rail; we watch the water. Top-ups ride mobile money and the vending platform. We deliberately stay off the payment rails — reconciliation uses vended-volume records (export or API) against measured flow, keeping verification independent of payment processing.
- Intermittent supply complicates prepaid fairness. Where rationing means a zone is dry half the week, customers rightly ask what they're paying for. Charge-window telemetry documents exactly when supply was live at each point — the fairness record a prepaid scheme under rationing needs.
- Hard sites are normal sites. Market standpipes and compound meters face vandalism, no fixed power and patchy coverage. Enclosed, tamper-alarmed hardware on solar/battery, reporting over 4G/LoRaWAN, with buffering through dumsor, is the standard build.

Prepaid water verification in Ghana — common questions
Do you supply prepaid water meters in Ghana?
No — and that's the point. Meter vendors verify their own hardware; an independent telemetry layer verifies the scheme. Our value is precisely that we have no meter sales to defend: measured flow versus vended volume, reported neutrally.
How is this different from what the vending platform reports?
The platform reports transactions — tokens sold, credit consumed. It cannot see water that bypassed the meter, a meter under-registering, or a valve passing when it shouldn't. Independent flow measurement upstream sees exactly those things, which is why the two records disagree in every scheme with a loss problem.
Can this help before we've deployed any prepaid meters?
Yes — arguably that's the best time. Zone-level reconciliation against your existing post-paid meters establishes the loss baseline and identifies where prepaid will recover the most, so the rollout is aimed by evidence. The same instrumentation then verifies the rollout as it lands.
What about rationed zones — is prepaid even fair there?
It's fair when it's documented. Charge-window telemetry records when each zone or point actually had supply, so customers pay against real availability and the scheme can show it. That record defuses the most common complaint prepaid water faces under rationing.
What does a verification pilot cost?
A pilot on one zone or a handful of points is quoted as a written cost band after a free remote review of your scheme and vending platform. Verification typically pays for itself out of the first bypass or drifting meter batch it finds.
Whose vending systems can you reconcile against?
Any platform that can export vended volumes — CSV, database export or API. We normalise the records into the dashboard beside measured flow; where a platform can't export yet, independent flow trending alone still exposes dead points, night draw and bypass signatures.
